The Ministry of Environment Headquarters building represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to develop a scheme that is not only sustainable and exemplar but can demonstrate sustainability to the public at large, by building awareness and changing behaviour.
The scheme is made from local sustainably sourced timber. Orientating and massing is designed to minimise heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. Passive design minimises energy use and natural cross ventilation helps with cooling.
The scheme also uses PV arrays and other renewable sources.  One the defining aspects of the design are spaces that are used for sustainability exhibitions both indoor and outdoor for public awareness.
