Arab Spring

Arab Spring is an orientalist appliqué through which we visualise then seek to impose our ideals upon the east. More important than rhetoric or what Noam Chomsky might describe as the propaganda of language, is the required liberation of public space which is a pre-requisite for free society.

Professor Rabbat, Aga Khan, MIT points out that public space in the Arab world is limited to mosque courtyard and the nineteenth piazza brought in by occupying western powers. Our view is that the Arab cityscape has a range of urban spaces from in-between spaces of Jeddah’s Balad to the controlled and privatised space of the mall all of which require reappraisal. So what in a material sense is the architecture of revolution?
