The Motherhood Tears

The city of Derbent takes its name from the Persian word, ‘door opening’ which reflects the open and tolerant culture that still pervades the city. Our approach for unique The Motherhood Tears project acknowledges the openness of Derbent but also recognizes that The Grand Mosque will be the focal point of our scheme. Our proposal will demonstrate how the three great monotheistic religions of Islam, Judaism, and Orthodox Christianity will create their own individual place of worship yet co-exist and establish meaningful dialogue in the landscape gardens of The Motherhood Tears site.

Our approach is rooted in cultural coexistence and harmony; characteristics which define Derbent, its people and its long history. Using architecture and landscape, we wish to create physical, spiritual, and ethereal space with a deep sense of purpose and symbolic meaning for each faith. We seek also to develop an architectural response that is inclusive and accessible to all worshipers regardless of age, gender or physical ability whilst also being open to those who do not practice religion.
