Bay Mosque

Jubail, KSA

The Ghazi Al Gosaibi Mosque, was built in honour of the distinguished Saudi poet and polymath. The scheme is located in Jubail on the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia; an historically improvised area where livelihoods depended on fishing and pearl diving. Many pearl divers perished at sea yet their faith was resolute, giving them courage and solace. The mosque celebrates the pearl-diving tradition of the area, where inner spirituality and precious faith is protected by the shell-like space of the building’s roof and enclosure.

The scheme accommodates 1,000 worshippers with a public realm that helps define the newly built seafront area of Jubail city. The structure of the mosque is expressed as ribs within the building that converge in the Mihrab or direction of prayer towards Makkah. The 5 minarets representing the 5 pillars of Islam help to make the mosque a visible marker in the surrounding area. The reflection of the building in the waters of the bay creates a deeper and more profound spiritual connection between the seafaring past of Jubail and its kindred connection to faith.
